I
s Jesus Christ God?

Many people who believe in Jesus, and have been taught and even believe that He died for their sins, might be surprised to learn that He is God. That is, He is of the same essence as God the Father and God the Holy Spirit. First learning that everything was created through Him and that He is God may unsettle those who don't know the scriptures very well yet.The Christ (Messiah), foretold in the old testament of the Bible, is God. Jesus claimed to be the Christ. For more about this, see the article, "Did Jesus Christ Claim to be God?".

Apart from His claim, Jesus also fulfilled many prophecies that prove He is the Christ. For an introduction to some of the prophecies He fulfilled read the article, "Prophecy, the Bible and Jesus" (opens in a separate window) on CARM's website. Among the prophesies fulfilled by Jesus was the display of the power of God to perform miracles of healing, miracles of creation, miracles demonstrating control over nature, and authority over spiritual beings. Even if one man could beat the odds, and managed to fulfill some of the many prophecies in the scriptures concerning the Christ, in order to fulfill all the prophesies, he'd still have to have to display the mighty power of God, which is something outside his control all-together. Jesus was born at the right time and in the right place.  He fulfilled all the prophesies foretold of the Christ that were to be fulfilled at His first coming.  He Himself prophesied of events that have been fulfilled, demonstrating unearthly knowledge. He displayed the mighty power of God which attested to His identity. He is the Christ. He is God.

"And Thomas answered and said to Him, 'My Lord and my God!'", John 20:28 [NKJV]

The Apostle Paul's Letters:

Colossians 2:6-9 (NLT)
The apostle tells us, "And now, just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him.  Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness. Don’t let anyone capture you with empty philosophies and high-sounding nonsense that come from human thinking and from the spiritual powers of this world, rather than from Christ. For in Christ lives all the fullness of God in a human body." In this passage Paul is instructing believers to continue to follow Jesus and grow in Him. He goes on to warn them against getting trapped by worldly wisdom. He separates Christ's truth from these others and states that in Jesus, the Christ, lives all the fullness of God in a human body.

Titus 2:12-13 (NKJV)
The apostle tells us, "we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ". Here Paul refers to Jesus as "God and Savior".

The Apostle John Says:

In the beginning verses of the gospel of John the apostle gives us the clear message that Jesus, "The Word", is God. It is suggested that you read straight through John 1:1-34 as you look at this passage.

"The Word" is God
John 1:1-3 reads, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made." These verses describe a person who is titled, "The Word". This person was "with God", and "was God". The verses go on to tell us that all things were made through this person and nothing was made without Him.

"The Word" Became Flesh
So who is this person who is titled "The Word"? We're given more clues several verses later in John 1:14 where we read, "And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. John [the baptist, mentioned in preceeding verses] bore witness of Him and cried out, saying, “This was He of whom I said, ‘He who comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me.’” Here we read that the person (God) became flesh and dwelt among us and that John testified of Him.

"The Word" is Jesus
A few verses later we read in John 1:29-30, "The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! This is He of whom I said, ‘After me comes a Man who is preferred before me, for He was before me.’" And here we clearly read the name of the person the writer has been talking about.

To summarize:

  • "The Word" is a title of a person
  • That person was with God in the beginning
  • That person was God
  • That person created all things
  • That person became flesh and dwelt among us
  • John the baptist spoke about, and to, this person who's name was Jesus

The Writer of the Book of Hebrews says:

Hebrews 1:8 (NKJV)
"But to the Son He says: 'Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom.'"  Quoting the old testament book of Psalms, the writer ascribes the words to God the Father, and directed to God the Son.

EasyTip: As with any Bible study, remember to pray, dedicate your time to the Lord, and ask for His guidance and illumination of His word (the Bible).
